The ICF lists “Planning and Goal Setting” as one of its core competencies. This includes working with the client to clarify and develop goals that achieve more than just the presenting concerns of the client. How do you do that as a coach while honoring the current coaching request of your client? How do you support the client in creating an effective plan?

The opportunity is to support your clients in expanding the conversation around goal setting. The opportunity is to transform the notion of working hard on goals to an experience where the client is inspired to create what they really want. It aligns purpose, dreamscaping, SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based) goals, promised action, and lessons learned. This expanded conversation moves them forward in achieving the results they want and the overall experience they are committed to generating for themselves and others.

In this workshop, our presenters will support you in honing your skill in this core competency by:

  • highlighting how to work with clients to get clear on their relationship to goal setting with the awareness that a disempowering relationship to goal setting will kill even the best planning tools;
  • discussing the common ways in which people sabotage their goals (procrastination, overwhelm, blaming lack of motivation or willpower, blaming others, lack of sufficient action, lack of effective action, etc.) and how to support clients in taking 100% ownership for what they want; and
  • practicing powerful questioning that elevates the conversation such that clients gain clarity on what they really want with a renewed energy and excitement around the possibility of it. This then sets the stage for you to bring your favorite goal setting and accountability tools to the table.

Workshop participants will receive 1.5 ICF core competency CCEUs.
